I can hear Japanese and know the English word, but not vice versa?
  • If I hear a Japanese word I had looked up the meaning to before, I know what the English word is. But I can't know a Japanese word from the English word.

If I just read more, will I be able to do it both ways, or should I focus more on learning the words?
  • Well, listening is a different skill to reading, but understanding J>E is probably going to be much more useful for you than being able to produce E>J anyway, and with time you'll stop translating in your head altogether, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.
