The Denshi Jisho Forum is a place for people to help each other with Japanese, and a great way for users to get together and socialize.
Vanilla 1.1.4 is a product of Lussumo. More Information: Documentation, Community Support.
I am currently hard at work on a new version of Denshi Jisho that will support JMdict for more structured data and a lot of small interface tweaks. The main work however is on the backend, which will pave way for new features down the road.
One thing that I'm not sure if it's a good idea or not, and that I'd like som input on, is wheter Internet Explorer 6 support is very important. I'd prefer to scrap support for it completely, but currently 10% of Denshi Jisho visitors use it.
The page wouldn't be unusable in IE6 if I dropped support for it, it'd just not have to spend hours and hours to make it look good.
IE7 has been out for a long time and I'd like to know from those of you still on IE6 if there is any particular reason that prevents you from upgrading.
Of course, I'd prefer it if everyone just switched to Safari, as it's the browser I use, and I sweat over every single pixel being perfect in it :)
I make Denshi Jisho. You should definitely drop IE6 IMO. Those 10% who still use it need to learn that it's a crappy browser or they will keep using it forever, they are way overdue for an upgrade or change.
Write a small explanation on the first page for IE6 users that their browser is outdated, and keep it at that.
Kim: sorry, no Safari on my FreeBSD boxes. :P
On FreeBSD I use Opera 9.5x and Firefox 3
On Ubuntu I use Opera 9.5x and Firefox 3
and on Windows I use IE 8, Opera 9.5x, Firefox 3 and Safari 3. And Safari feels clunky to use on Windows so I only touch it to verify rendering.
Personally I only use Firefox 3. Safari simply lacks features, Opera feels like a worse version of Firefox... IE is just... No.
I did use Opera before, but eventually I found it to be pretty much identical to Firefox 2 while Firefox was better supported by most sites.
Glad you both agree. To hell with IE6 then :)
I make Denshi Jisho.Hahaha, well, it is not so clearcut. IE6 is still used a lot. Heck, I had some Japanese friend of mine tell me some ministry still uses Navigator 7 for a variety of reasons.
In the end it is you, Kim, who can best decide how to spend your development time.
And, doing a similar thing as you, I can understand the shitload of work it brings along with it.
