How to say "I don't know what to say"?
  • Hello;

    The last day, someone asked me to say something in Japanese and I tried to say "When people asks this to me, I never know what to say", but I'm not very sure if I did it correctly. My try was:

    Is this correct? There are something more accurate or natural?
  • 何と言えばいいか分からない is a natural way to say "I don't know what to say"
  • I agree with Richard. By the way, I would suggest 誰かがこれを聞くとき (When someone...) rather than 人が... (When people...).
  • I would say そう聞かれたら instead of 人がこれを聞くとき.
  • Thanks a lot.
  • 何を言ったらいいか分からない。
  • 1st part:人に"これ"を聞かれるときに(when asked "this")
    2nd parts:
    More specifically describing your language issue with the question:
    blah blah blahb alh
  • この質問には、(いつも、)どう答えたらいいかわかりません。
  • If you're in Japan, you should learn the facial expressions, postures, gestures, and sounds to make when embarrassed. The idea is to denigrate yourself as much as possible with as few words as possible. This, however, requires true mastery and you probably should just follow the good advice above.
  • Yeah that is right! medmal knows what he is talking about!
  • In most situations, simply saying 分からない or a variant thereof is more than sufficient to get your point across. Literally, it means "I don't know," and it can carry the implication of "I don't know what to say" or "I don't know how to say" depending on context.

    I hope this helps...
