I have Windows XP on my computer, and a keyboard with a western (English language) layout.

I have Japanese on my language bar, so I can easily switch between typing in European languages and in Japanese. However, this only works offline. Whenever I want to Google a Japanese term, or write in Japanese on Denshi Jisho, I have to type it in a Word document and then cut and paste to here.

Is there a setting that will allow me to type in Japanese when online?

The English/Japanese setting is remembered per application.

So if you start Firefox, IE, or whatever, it will default the IME to your default choice. You will then have to select the IME you want to work in. I use the Japanese IME both online and offline, it does not even have a concept for such a difference. I'm kind of curious why it would not work for you.

Yeah, the Windows IME doesn't know, care or understand wether you're online or not, it simply knows what kind of text the current application accepts. There are several things which matter, but if you can set the IME to japanese in word, you should be able to do it just as easily in Firefox or Internet Explorer.

On Linux though, it depends on what framework the application uses as GUI since the GUIs use different forms of input. For example, SCIM + Anthy works by right-clicking in a textfield and picking scim on any GTK2+ application, but doesn't work as easily on Firefox for example.

Right now, I only have two applications open - Word and Firefox.

In Word I have a little blue language bar, set to Japanese - I type using Romaji (e.g. k+a = ka), and it converts. Here, though, it just stays in Roman letters. The shortcut keys (left Alt+Shift) don't work here, either.

    インターネットエクスプローラーを使うとできるので、やっぱりファイヤーフォクスの問題です。
I guess it's a compatibility issue between Microsoft and Firefox.

I use Windows IME with Firefox all the time.... It's a problem with your settings, not an inherent fault of Firefox.

That's good news, as long as someone can tell me how to change my settings. お願い。

Good one. Have you enabled 'advanced text services to all applications' by chance?
