Need help with a Japanese phrase
  • ldollarldollar August 2010

I need to translate the 2-word phrase "shi oni" I know the second word refers to a "demon"... but "shi" can mean so many things, I'm just not sure what in this context. I do know it is something that is taboo or perhaps somewhat vulgar. Can anyone help? Thanks so much...

jisho says 塩煮 しおに boiled salted fish. It would help a lot if you would tell us more about where you found this phrase, what the context is, and if you have any kanji of your 2-word phrase. Also, are you certain your romanization "shi oni" is correct?

This phrase is used as a nickname by a girl I'm seeing. She signs her txt messages as "Shioni." I'm trying to guess what it means and so far she has confirmed that "demon," or a similar word, is part of it but won't tell me the full phrase (I suppose it's kind of a game to see if I can translate it.)
Hope this context helps. Any info you can provide is much appreciated...

I have already guessed "boiled salted fish" (from an online translation site) and that was obviously not it :)

I wondered when I first read this post if it might be 死 and 鬼 put together. In other words, 'death demon'. But that would be pronounced 'shiki'. However, if it's just someone's nickname it might be an unusual pronunciation with someone just playing with the words. So, it could be 'death demon'. From Google it also seems there's a manga called 屍鬼 (Corpse Demon) which should be pronounced 'shiki', but you could playfully (if strictly incorrectly) pronounce it 'shioni'. Could be a reference to that.

Do you think that seems like a plausible name for this girl? If we're just guessing things with the pronunciation 'shi', there are a ton of other possibilities too, so it might not be that morbid.

It was indeed "Death Demon." She is somewhat "Goth," but not really that morbid. I guess that nickname just kinda stemmed from her love of manga and anime.

After seeing "death" and "corpse" as some of the first translations for "shi" listed on a website, I had actually guessed "death demon" earlier this week, but she maybe didn't read the txt correctly.

Many thanks, blutorange and Richard. Ya'll were alot of help.
