how do I state the age of a tree?
  • A friend has just asked me how he would say a sentence like "The tree is five years old" and I realised I'm not sure... I'm thinking it might be something like:

Ki wa uetsukete kara go-nen ni naru. ?

-- but that's assumes I know it's been planted. Is there a more natural, generic way to talk about a tree that might have grown there by itself? Thank you!

  • I think use 樹齢 (じゅれい) when talking about the age of a tree.

    この木は樹齢5年です。

  • Great! Thank you very much!

    It could also be:

    この木の樹齢は5年です。
This tree's age is five years.

BTW "an old tree" is 樹齢の長い木 ("a tree of long life").

  • Thank you! This is really helpful.
