What causes temporary website glitch sometimes???
  • montana16montana16 February 2010

I use this website all the time and I think it's the best denshi jisho around. However, I notice from time to time, there is some kind of weird glitch that occurs where, suddenly, simple kanji words or single kanji are not recognized.
It usually happens when I am in the process of looking up intermediate/advanced type words. Things seems suspicious to me at first when, all of a sudden, certain words (not even obscure ones by the way)are not recognized, i.e. I get the message, "...0 words found...". This is when I perform a check/test to see if the website is working properly or not; I will then put in something simple like "車" or "人", and I end up getting the same message, "...0 words found..."---which is completely ridiculous since, those are simple kanji with many words that include those characters.
Always though, after some time, this "glitch" goes away, and the system returns to working properly. I have tried many things, closing the site, reopening; logging off then back on; even, turning off my computer and starting over; but, none of this seems to help.

Has anyone else here ever encountered this or knows what causes this problem??? Luckily, it's always temporary, but it is extremely annoying and I would like to know what is causing this irritating problem. Is there anyway to contact the person who operates this site. When it shut down a few weeks ago, some posted notices about when the website would be working again---is there any way to contact this person???

Yup, I have had this before. No guess as to what could cause it. When it happens, I head on over to the "official" WWWJDIC, which is basically this site with a less pretty interface.

Well, I'm glad to hear someone knows what I am talking about. Thanks for the additional info.

    I make this site :)

I reload the database every morning Central European time, it might be that you happen to access it during this 10-15 minute window. It's supposed to keep the previous day's data available while the new data is loading, but it sounds like this is not happening. I'll take a look at fixing it.

Sorry, and thanks for reporting this.

I just remembered something though---when I typed my original question topic (above), that was right after the problem occurred. I am in the Eastern time zone, but the problem happened in the evening a few minutes before I posted the original topic question. So, I'm not sure if you're reloading database in the morning is actually the problem. :(

FIY: Its 10pm EST and the problem is now occurring.

  • KimKim February 2010

10pm EST is 3am Central European Time though, which is exactly when the reload happens. So that pretty much confirms it.

Thanks for posting the timing, this helps a lot in correcting the issue.

Thanks again! I didn't realize you meant Central EUROPEAN Time---I thought you were in the States. Anyway, problem solved, YAY!!!
