Glad to hear and see some info on it. Love the site. By far the best Japanese jisho I've found online.
Btw, during the downtime, I ran into another online dictionairy site, and noticed they had a "add vocabulary" option.
I thought was kind of sweet. Wonder how hard it would be to add something like that in the future. Though I suppose unless the "add vocab" option also had some kind of SRS randomizer to help study, it wouldn't be as helpful, but only compile a list for you.
Looking forward to the site being back up again. Better than Jim Breens if you ask me :p
holy sh*t, one day, only 1 day this site was down and I got stuck. Shows you how much I use this site. Keep up the good work. :)
Alright! The website is back!^^ Thanks for fixing it.
[Edit]: Hmm... The letters of said romanji word is spaced out?
Thanks so much for getting the website back. It has been instrumental to my learning of Japanese.
I just have one question...before the server went down I was able to search conjugated verbs and it would pull up the root verb. However, I don't seem to have that capability anymore. Am I the only one experiencing this issue? Or is this something that still needs to be fixed?
@kokujin: An "add vocab" feature would be nice. But as you say it would be most useful if it was connected to a proper SRS system. It's something I might consider for the future, but right now I have some other features I'm working on so it will have to wait.
@Papigiulio: Thanks, will do! :)
@endlessabyss: Yes, the romaji function changed a bit. I'll remove the spaces later today so it's easier to read.
@cic.wang: Thanks for reporting this! I had missed one detail in the upgrade, so this feature was still offline. I've fixed it now so it should be working as expected.
I'll do a writeup of the downtime later today, detailing what happened, why, and my future plans for the site.
Cheers,
Kim
First of all, let me thank everyone for the kind messages on the forum, Twitter and e-mail during the downtime. Your encouragement is greatly appreciated, and made me work extra hard to get the site back up as quickly as possible.
Here's the backstory. Denshi Jisho keeps growing every week and I've been meaning to put some better statistics in place so I can know when to upgrade the hardware and software that runs the site. So earlier this week I upgraded the server monitoring software, with the unfortunate consequence that a critical piece of software for the site also got upgraded and broke. This was entirely my fault as I wasn't careful enough in the upgrade process.
Rather than downgrade I figured I'd bite the bullet and upgrade as much as I could since the site was down and this needed to be done at some point anyway. This amounted to 1.5 years of software updates so took a fair while. But when everything was upgraded I still had troubled getting a few pieces in place for Denshi Jisho, which is why the forum came back faster. Now that the site is back everything is humming along smoothly, and I'm monitoring the server to see if I need to buy new hardware sooner rather than later.
I'm committed to keeping Denshi Jisho running and to upgrade it with new features. Lately I've gotten back on track with the (by now vaporware-ish) update that I've been talking about for the past year. Those of you who are interested can follow the progress on GitHub: http://github.com/Kimtaro/jisho.org
I hope to have a public beta of the new site up sometime in February to get some comments from you all before I make it live, as there are some significant changes to word result layout for example.
Cheers,
Kim
