Mystery Kanji
  • ItAintEazyItAintEazy January 2010

I've encountered a character of which I can't make heads or tails of. The hen is 斗 followed by 目 radical. Here's the picture.

Not much context there, so sorry if I'm way off track, but is there any possibility of confusion with 科目?

  • ItAintEazyItAintEazy January 2010

Nope, I swear the dipper is the left radical and the eye is the right in a single character. Actually it's supposed to be a place name ([斗目]海岸) or "[whatever-the-heck-that-kanji-is] Beach" and I did hear it say that place was a "little known spot" so maybe it's just a made-up character. Especially since there's apparently no such thing as a "metsukuri" (目つくり).

I found an obscure island called 目斗嶼 (in which the kanji you mention is actually two kanji). It's on this page in Japanese Wikipedia:

That's my best guess. Possibly made up and based on this place.

Oh, sorry I've noticed I managed to reverse the kanji. But anyway I still think it's probably two kanji.

Okay, I finally identified the kanji: 湘. And apparently the kanji is so uncommon that I couldn't find it in my little character dictionary >_>

Thanks for the follow-up, but do you have an explanation why the kanji you identified (湘) doesn't look like the kanji given in the picture in the original post.

That character is even on the list of most frequently appearing kanji.

Well, I obviously combined two radicals due to the kanji being handwritten and seen from a distance. I'm sure people are allowed to make a couple of mistakes along the road, right?

Well, in that case, it's time to get a new dictionary :^\

OK, fair enough. Just a little confused, because you sounded so definite about what it looked like when you originally posted. If it really was a very obscure kanji I wondered if it might not be displaying properly or something like that.
