How to use "しようっと"
  • mcdreamermcdreamer October 2009

    Hi all,

The other day my girlfriend said 「食べようっと」 to me. I asked her what it meant and she said it means that you intend on doing the verb. Could anyone expand on this at all? Is the 「っと」 part an abbreviation for something?

    Thanks in advance...

Just double checked my grammar dictionary just in case, I didn't see this specifically with volitional form and と but I'm pretty sure it's just used to soften your intention or make it indirect.

It might have been 「食べようと」 as in 「食べようと思ってる」 - "I'm thinking about eating", "I'm thinking 'let's eat' ".

    俚語としては、「食べようって」と同じ意味だと思います。

I think what she means is that you like eating foods that are new or that you invented... ?

    "~しようっと" adds meaning of "shall".

"Shall I eat? yes I do!"
    「食べようっと」
this sentence starts and ends itself.
Not asking anybody, just this expression makes meaning of "start to do" something.
