Terms with sensitivity about their usage
  • louislouis September 2009

I discovered a word today with "(sens)" in its definition; looked it up and apparently that's what it means. The word is 田舎 - anyone know why this is a sensitive word?

Also, do you know of any other words like this with "(sens)"? I tested 外人 and sure enough, there it is.

乞食 (こじき) which means "beggar" is also sens.

田舎 can be negative in the same way 'provincial' can be in English, with connotations of being backwards or unsophisticated. On the Yahoo page it also has 田舎者 which can be used insultingly like 'bumpkin' in English.
