には meaning
  • Please explain me about には in the follwing sentence. 「人でないものは、人間相手にはこういう感じで尊大に喋るもんだって言う、先入観が・・・・・・」 I've got two versions, however I can't understand which one of them is better, "Human partners may prejudice, that non-human beings are talking to them arrogantly like this." or "There is prejudice that non-humans talk to humans in this arrogant way." ?
And I'm not sure how can we translate「そろそろ止めてもいいかな?」, "Can you stop it already?" or "May I stop it already?" ?

    「この堅っ苦しい喋り方。そろそろ止めてもいいかな?」
    「え?」
    「人でないものは、人間相手にはこういう感じで尊大に喋るもんだって言う、先入観が・・・・・・」

(Male is 人間 and the girl is 人でないもの)

    Thank you very much!
  • Okay, so... This whole thing is kinda confusing without knowing what happened before but as best as I can see it - it looks like this guy and this 'non-human' just broke some sorta barrier and they've gotten closer (more freindly) with each other.
So, the non-human says "And one more thing, そろそろ止めてもいいかな?" which I would translate actually as "Can we stop that too pretty soon?" (already is more like when they say "もう," "そろそろ" is described pretty well on jisho, the second definition so here's the link http://jisho.org/words?jap=sorosoro&eng=&dict=edict) and obviously 'that' is referring to the painfully uncomfortable, stiff way of talking <-which I'm guessing is either referring to them talking really formally before or just something being awkward before but). Also, I chose we because the ~moiikana refers to 'I' or the speaker's actions but since it is a shaberi, it involves two people - which means that both of them are the subject.<br />And then your second version "There is prejudice that non-humans talk to humans in this arrogant way." is better because we can't assume that human partners are the ones with the prejudice because the 'owner' of the prejudice isn't specified. However "人でないもの" is behind the "は" so we know that is the subject and we can use it with confidence.
I hope that helps, I know I write kinda scatter brained so, if you have a question email me at mr.jdwolfe@gmail.com
  • Thank you very much for your explanation.
  • No problem man, anytime.
