Offline Denshi
  • MobergMoberg February 2008

Hi! I was wondering: is there some way to get denshi jisho offline, for your (pocket)computer?
I don't really feel like using jwpCE (but some other softs maybe are good?)

Or maybe some dictionary for NintendoDS except 漢字そのまま楽引き辞典? Cause it doesn't have a name dictionary and not all words/readings... (or perhaps there is some secret way of figuring out what is names in a japanese text; that I don't know of?)

At this point I don't have any plans to make Denshi Jisho available as anything else than a web page. However, I have entertained the idea of making a Mac OS X application version, but it's currently not a priority since it would require a lot of time and taking focus away from jisho.org.

Have you considered getting a real denshi jisho? Currently the ones made by Casio and Sharp are quite good and I'd recommend looking into them. Wikipedia has a page about them, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_dictionary

If you decide to make a java version insted of an OS X version and need extra programmers, let me know ^^

That is probably not going to happen as I prioritize user interface over portability ;)

One alternative would be a self-hosted Perl installation, but it sounds like there would be a lot of boring support work with that.

I will say that I have played a bit with the iPhone SDK though ...

Yes I am considering... But I don't know what model to buy, neither where I could buy them from (I live in Sweden).
I's there a big difference in number of look up-able words in Seiko's models (PW-M800 and PW-M310) and Casio's models?
And is is much more exepensive if I want one that can manage korean as well?

If someone has some comments on any invaluable feature that I should try to have in my denshi jisho, please tell me! :)

As I get it, the advantage of the Sharp models id that they are capable of looking up a wider range of word by kanji without having to enter the kana, is that correct? I would like to be able to look up 活躍 without knowing the reading...

I'd recommend kanji sono mama for DS insted of buying a wordtank, it has the same functionality for the same price and you get a whole gaming system with it.

EDIT: Since you brought up the problems with it in your first post: A naming dictionary, while useful, isn't really a must. It's 95% of the time obvious from a japanese text when something is a name, and a naming dictionary won't help you since most names have TONS of pronounciations. Not all words are included in kanji sono mama, but no wordtank has all words. My friend bought a canon with stylus (so yeah, a pretty new model) and it had the exact same dictionary as kanji sono mama.

In my experience, it's hard to find a wordtank equally capable to kanji sono mama unless you pay a LOT more.

Oh is that so!, Than maybe I will stick with my Nintendo DS ^^
I just don't wanna sit at the exam and not be able to look up a word :P

From my experience, you'd have to do a really odd test in japanese to have a word not show up in kanji sono mama. In all probability, the word was entered incorrectly or maybe not in the correct conjugation. There are certainly words missing, I've personally stumbled upon quite a few while translating manga.. but words on an exam? I doubt it, unless it's JLPT1 and they picked some really obscure word. Safe to say, it's a good dictionary :)

Well, of course it's stupid words, otherwise we wouldn't be allowed to have a dictionary. (Like "Ministry of the Environment") sigh :'(

    And there was one verb that had the "old" pronunciation, but doesn't really matter so. ^^;

Nyare exempel: 腹ばい fanns inte i Kanji Sono Mama...

Finns inte i jisho.org heller. Vad är det du försöker skriva?

Edit: Ah, 腹這い (harabai). Det finns både i jisho.org och kanji sono mama. Som sagt, det mesta finns. Man måste bara komma ihåg att japanska ordböcker är ganska chinkiga, man kan inte blanda kanji och hiragana hur man vill.

I wonder why I suddenly switched to Swdish :P

Ah, of course but still, you can't be sure since adjectives and verbs use okurigana...

And regarding 直, just one reading had a translation =/

I'm attempting to do this on a mac running XAMPP using the source code for denshi jisho I dl'd from github...
I'm a bit puzzled by the lack of index.html or base html document. I think I need general guidance on how to continue with this project

I think a real denshi jisho is super-cool. But they don't fit in a pocket :-) Does denshi have anything on a pocketpc?
