見届け屋 ー English translation?
  • Hi everyone. The term 「見届け屋」(mitodokeya) comes up in a novel I'm (quixotically) trying to translate, and I am breaking my head open over rendering a suitably snappy and atmospheric English rendering.

The context is, the "mitodokeya" runs an Internet suicide club, and her self-imposed duty is to recruit people who are thinking of ending their lives, encourage and accompany them, and make sure they go through with it. Google brings up a few usages, news articles and such, with the same usage; so it doesn't look like the writer made this up herself. Literally it's something like "the guy who makes sure" only with sort of a professional nuance, I guess. "The Ascertainer", however, sounds like something from the Marvel slush pile, and "The Enforcer" is even worse. Anyone else got any creative ideas?
  • Looking at the brief description of this novel and possibilities of using 屋, I'd suggest "Offering certainty" or "Selling certainty".
