「やったダネ!」? What does “ダネ” mean?
  • I was playing ポケモン不思議のダンジョン 赤の救助隊 (Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team in the USA) and my character said this after he leveled up:

    「やったダネ! レブルが あがったダネ!」

What is "ダネ"? I've tried searching on jisho and Google, both left me clueless. Any help would be appreciated. My best guess at the moment is that it's some kind of suffix that shows the speaker is excited, or happy.
  • It's just だ (copula) and ね (sentence ending particle) in katakana. What your character said is: "We did it! Your level has increased!". In this context, it's just for marking happiness. With question mark it works as English "right?" and - rarely - question tag.
  • Seems like your character has a "catch-phrase" or "kutchi-guse" (mouth habit). Expect to see that relatively frequently.

It is as MaestroS says, da + ne. Desu + ne.

But as a kutchiguse it will become relatively meaningless and just a way to separate one character from another in the game. It is marked out as "not real words, just go with it" by its being written in katakana in this instance. Will probably show up randomly when the character speaks about something he's happy or excited about.
  • Thanks guys for the help! :) It seems so far it's only my character that has this "kutchiguse" but now I'll know what to do if I see one again.
  • If another character speaks the same one with using katakana, they are likely using it as commentary about the main character's habit or mimicking them.
