dictionary entry for 急に: not "common"?
  • I just did a search for 急に (きゅうに) and was surprised to find that its common meaning of "suddenly" is not flagged as a "common word".

Is that related to the similar issue with やる
    http://forum.jisho.org/discussion/1168/dictionary-entry-for-やる-/
which will be fixed when Jisho.org switches over the JMdict file?
  • 急に isn't marked as common in EDICT2/JMdict, so no for that, but やる should be marked as "common" after upgrading. Maybe send an email to Jim Breen to mark it as common.
  • No, this is for some reason not marked as a common word in the JMdict file either.
  • So what @zornn said :)

That's what I get for opening a page in the morning and answering in the evening.

It's also possible to submit edits directly through the WWWJDIC interface at http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/cgi-bin/wwwjdic.cgi?1C
  • I've emailed Jim Breen to include some yojijukugo and asked him to mark "急に" as common. His reply:

"I saw the 急に submission and marked it so it gets a "P"
    from tomorrow."
  • @zornn, great, thanks!

Yes, I submitted the proposed change via the website so I guess we hit him on two fronts at the same time!

I's be grateful if you guys could help me understand the various different databases here...
So has Jim changed the entry in WWWJDIC or JMDICT?
How can I look at entries in JMDICT?
When does this change propagate to jisho.org?
  • I think he first makes a change in JMdict, which then propagates to WWWJDIC.

I think you can search the master JMdict file here: http://www.edrdg.org/jmdictdb/cgi-bin/srchformq.py?svc=jmdict&sid=

Jisho.org is updated manually by me at irregular intervals. I spend most of my time working on the new site now, so it's not very often.
