恥ずかしい
  • Hi everyone!
I am a bit confused about the meaning of the word 恥ずかしい. Denshi Jisho gives "shy" as its first meaning, then "ashamed" and "embarrassed". But in most examples the word is used with the meanings of "ashamed", "embarrassed", "embarrassing", "shameful" etc, so I wonder if I could use it to say, for example:

    I wanted to send you a message, but I'm a little shy = Xさんにメッセージを送りたかったですけど、ちょっと恥ずかしいですよ。

Basically, I'm not sure if I can use 恥ずかしい to say things like "I'm shy" (私は恥ずかしいです)or "She's a shy girl" (彼女は恥ずかしい女のこです)

    Thank you!
  • Well, I think [恥ずかしい] is used when talking about feelings and actions, rarely when directly describing people.

I find [Xさんにメッセージを送りたかったですけど、ちょっと恥ずかしいですよ。] good, but for [私は恥ずかしいです] I'd use [寡黙な人] rather than [恥ずかしい].

At least, that's what I think.
  • Thank you for your answer. What you say matches what I found.
So basically [Xさんにメッセージを送りたかったですけど、ちょっと恥ずかしいですよ。] means "I wanted to send you a message, but it's a little embarrassing/I'm a little embarrassed", right? If so, I wonder whether the sentence is appropriate, as I meant to write it to someone I never met in person who sent me a message for the first time. I feel it might look slightly off-putting, but maybe I just worry too much.
In any case, I think that listing "shy" as the first meaning of [恥ずかしい] is misleading, especially as the examples do not reflect this.
  • Well, if you wanted to send the message back, I think 送り返したかった would be better. I'd write it 「Xさんにメセージを送り返したかったけどちょっと恥ずかしいと思いました」.

    I don't think I'd be inappropriate but It would sound a little 外人-like ^^
  • A shy person in Japanese is シャイな人 or a 恥ずかしがり屋。

As you've discovered, the word 恥ずかしい is used to describe the embarrassing act or event itself, not the shy person doing or experiencing them. EDICT (the dictionary file that this site uses) is not perfect and shouldn't be taken as gospel.

I'm not sure what's embarrassing about what you're trying to do, but for reference, here is a way to say what you want to say:

    ◯◯さんに返事を送りたかったですけど、ちょっと恥ずかしいです。

'I wanted to send you a message, but it's a little embarrassing.'

I wouldn't put a よ at the end because there's no reason for you to be asserting this fact emphatically.
  • Thank you for your suggestions, you've been very helpful! Anyway, I think I'll just use シャイ or 寡黙 or 内気, as they are closer to what I actually want to say.
