So I continue reading the chocolate factory. And saw this. はるばるいんどまでやってきて、全部チョコレートでできた巨大な宮殿を建ててほしい、とたのんだのだ
What does とたのんだのだ mean? I understand the things before the phrase, but this last part does not seem like anything I have read before. thanks all!
EDITED: removed '?' question mark
You have to think of it like this:
「宮殿を建ててほしい」、と 頼んだ のだ?
と is the "quoting particle", such as in と言う etc.
(〜と頼む = ask somebody to do / request / ask for something)
"(He wished wonka to come) from afar, make his way to India, and build a huge palace made from only chocolate. " was the request (from the letter sent by the prince.)
My attempt at translating it from Japanese. (parentheses mine. I couldn't resist putting them in to make the context more complete.) does the translation work? Thanks!
Giving context is a very good idea, translating above sentence without is quite hard. I assume the context is correct. The translation is probably not the best way to say it in English - but the meaning is certainly correct. Don't forget it's a question though.
(We don't intend to make a professional translation; but if, how about "So, the prince made a request to Wonka that..."?)
